Rook is a no-nonsense type, with a morbid sense of humor. His early years were spent as a trained police K-9 and he knew pride and glory for the duration of his employment. Sadly, an injury sent the dog into early retirement. His handler, who he had once considered his best friend, decided to sell the dog because of the 'burden' of keeping him around. His next home found him with a wonderful military family and Rook nearly managed to convinced himself that he had died and gone to Heaven. The husband was his constant companion, the wife doted on and spoiled him, and their two-year old daughter was always up for an adventure or a snuggle. Even the cat managed to work out a peace treaty with the fierce canine. But life intervened in Rook's happiness. His owner - the husband - was sent overseas to fight in a war that the once-happy dog couldn't have known about. After a year, the greatest sadness that Rook had ever known happened - the man was killed in action. The family broke down after that. The wife wanted to move back in with her parents, and Rook was not able to come with his family. Instead of reliving the humiliation of being sold once again, Rook ran away. He became his own dog for once in his life, but kept his collar as a memento of happier days. He also picked up a worn baseball bat that somehow managed to collect a few nails... and blood... to act as his new family. Naming the bat 'Lucy' after the daughter of his one-true master, Rook became a rough and tough street dog that enjoys a good fight. He's not necessarily a canine crime-lord, per se, but when he shows his face the other animals know they need to pay up. |
